Description

This course provides an overview of physical therapy and the physical therapist’s professional responsibilities. The Standards of Practice for Physical Therapy, Guidelines for Physical Therapy Documentation, and Guidelines for Professional Conduct are also discussed and developed with practical skills and knowledge necessary to manage patients. Some of the knowledge and practical skills that are developed include: assessment of vital signs, ensuring patient safety, infection control, using proper body mechanics, using appropriate transfers, basic gait training, documentation, basic bed and mat mobility training, functional ambulation activities with basic gait patterns, ambulation aids, wheelchair components and basic use, and the basics of patient and family education. This course also includes the importance of good communication in health care as well as topics such as patients’ rights, informed consent, and social considerations such as gender, race, culture, and ethnicity.
