Founded as Saint Mary Academy in 1859 and sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth, the University of Saint Mary for the fifth consecutive year was included in the 2001 U.S. News and World Report "America's Best Colleges" feature. The historic main campus encompasses 20 buildings on 240 beautiful acres of rolling eastern Kansas hillsides. Located just minutes away, Kansas City offers job and internship opportunities, along with a wide range of social and cultural resources. University of Saint Mary students enjoy a rich and varied educational experience defined not only by first-rate academics, but also by opportunities to participate in athletics, cultural and other character-building activities. Small class size and personal attention from professors are hallmarks of the University of Saint Mary academic curriculum, which includes 22 undergraduate programs and masters programs in education, teaching, psychology, business administration and management. University of Saint Marys three co-educational campuses have a combined population of 833 students, and the Leavenworth campus residence halls offer space for up to 340 students. Satellite campuses are located in Overland Park, Kansas and Kansas City, Kansas. University of Saint Mary students originate from 23 U.S. states and 10 countries. About 80 percent participate in athletics, and approximately 37 percent are Catholic. About 90 percent of Saint Marys traditional students receive some kind of financial aid.
