    Description

Victimology examines the complex relationship between criminological theories, theories of victimization, and criminal conduct. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the victimization process through analysis and discussion of interactional and societal theories of victimization. The course empowers students to contribute to positive change within the criminal justice system by exploring victim rights, trauma-informed approaches, and challenges in addressing crimes such as intimate partner violence, stalking, sexual assault, homicide, and human trafficking. Additionally, students learn about the concept of vicarious trauma and the importance of self-care in the context of victimology. This course equips students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to engage with real-world issues surrounding victims and the criminal justice system.Prerequisite: PY 150 OR SO 110
